Comp Questions

I have heard from more than one student that there is confusion regarding the comps. Let me try to see if I can sort some things out for you.

First, comps are given twice a year. We offer them in December and then again late May or early June (depends upon when weekend classes occur). These are the only times and there are no exceptions. So, you want to watch the blog for information for when and how to register. The calendar of testing for comps and NCE is given here on the blog. The only thing missing is the May/June date. That is being worked on and we should know in a week or two.

The second question that keeps coming up is "when should I take the comps"? There are two ways to answer this. First, you must have most or all of your courswork completed. Certainly you must have the basic core courses completed because these are what is tested. These classes are the first 6-8 courses that are in your sequence. For more specifics, see your advisor. Second, even if you have the core 6-8 classes completed, most students wait until their last term or second last term. In other words, usually during your practicum and internship phase.

Finally, people ask how to prepare. Again there are multiple answers. You should know the information being tested because your classes have covered the material. However, if you feel you may forget what was to be learned in your classes, you can study your textbooks again or get the book, Encyclopedia of Counseing. This is used by most. If you really want to study, there are study courses you can take as well. You can find out more about study courses from your advisor.

I hope this helps some. If you have more questions, again speak with your faculty advisor.

Argosy is almost a winner

As I have mentioned to many of you, every year at the ICA conference they identify which university has the most students in attendance. For the last three years Argosy has either had the most or been in second place. Again this year, we got second place. As I understand it, we lost by one student to Northern Illinois University.

So, good and bad to this. It is good that we are making a great show at the conference. Believe me when I say, people know that Argosy has a quality counseling program and isn't just a casino. At the same time, I like winning. So, we have work to do for next year.

Volunteeer for ICA

entsI have just heard from the Executive Director of ICA regarding when students can begin to volunteer to work the conference and thereby get free registration. I was told that the ICA website will have something posted any day now (today is Friday, July 8). If you are interested, I suggest you visit the site daily. Remember that you need to be a member of ICA to take advantage of this opportunity. Also, if you would prefer to not volunteer, you can still pay student registration fees to attend the conference. This year our goal is to have at least 40 Argosy students in attendance. For the last two years, Argosy has lead the way in the number of students in attendance. This type of visibility in the professional counseling circles is not only a boost for Argosy but also makes other, some your future employers, aware of Argosy, our program, and the professionalism of our students. This is win-win.

The ICA website is ilcounseling org. Please tell your student friends in case they don't visit the blog (shame on them).

If you have any trouble, contact your advisor or me. I hope to see many of you at the conference.

Special Message to those who took Comps

M.A. students,

I am sorry for the delay in getting your scores for the comps. I made an inquiry yesterday to discover that a significant slip-up occurred, probably with FedEx. In any case, NBCC never received your test materials, checks, and the like. It appears that FedEx never delivered them. But, I have found them and will be getting them to NBCC soon. I will ask NBCC to expedite scoring. I don't know how quickly they can do a turn-around but I will ask.

Hopefully this will all get resolved in a few weeks and your results will be back to you.

subscribing

Folks,

Thanks to student Todd Burd, I may now have the necessary information to get you as a subscriber to our blog. Remember, as a subscriber, you will receive notification, I think in your google email account, that a new posting has occurred on our blog. This will allow you to not have to go back to the blog every week but rather know when something new is there for you to investigate. Let's hope this works. If it is working for you, would you email me so I know it is and that the instructions I am about to give you are correct? Here is how I think you can subscribe.

  1. Go to our url argosyschaumburgcounselingdept.blogspot.edu
  2. Go to Google Reader
  3. click on subscription (on the left)
  4. past our blog url into the google reader subscription area
  5. this should then show up on your subscription list at the bottom

I believe you are then done. Again, please email me with results. I will continue to play with this until it is working.

The counseling department wants you!

Pretty cool huh? Go figure. The department chair figured out how to add a picture. Now if the chair could just get your help.
A student suggested to me some weeks ago that it would be nice if students could "subscribe" to the blog. I think what is meant by "subscribe" is that you can be added to the blog and every time a new message is put on the blog, you receive notification. Wow, didn't know you could do that. It's a great idea though. The counseling office needs you to view the blog so that you can be aware of news and updates. Wouldn't it be great if somehow you could be notified evertime something was added?
So, here is the rub. I don't know how to do this. I have tried. I bet however that one of our brilliant counseling students does know how to do this. So, hey, how about some help? If you have knowledge of how to make this happen, I would appreciate if you would share it with me. I am sure the counseling students would appreciate it as well. Please contact me by email if you can help with this project.
Thanks

News from CACREP

We have just received news from CACREP that the MACC programs accreditation has been extended until March 2015. Just so you are not confused. We have been accredited since 2007. CACREP only makes two decisions regarding accreditation. You are either accredited or not accredited. However, many universities, like ours, needed to satisfy some standards (in our case two) to bring us into full compliance. We were given until March of 2011 to do this. The letter we have now received from CACREP, which came in January, says we meet all the standards and so our accreditation continues. Accreditation is for an 8 year period, so in our case, 2007-2015. In the coming months, and certainly by next academic year, the Counseling Department will begin working on the required self-study to CACREP that will be due in 2014. With the self-study and a visit from the CACREP visiting team in 2014, we hope to move the counseling program to re-accreditation for the next 8-year period of 2015-2023. Accreditation is not a one time thing but an ongoing process. The counseling department is constantly modifying itself to meet new standards and to better prepare counselors for the future.
